Saving Grace

July 23rd, 2007

I watch a fair amount of TNT TV. I enjoy Law & Order and The Closer. The past couple of months we have been bombarded with adverts for a new show (that starts tonight) called Saving Grace. I won’t be watching it. I can barely stand the trailers.

My least favorite of the trailers shows the main character, inebriated way beyond driving capability, right after she has an accident, bending over a man in the road (that she presumably hit), and she says “God help me.” And he appears.

Those that know me probably assume that it is her appeal to God that annoys me the most. Although I do, indeed, find an appeal to an invisible sky daddy to be unnecessary and insulting to human dignity, they would be wrong that it is that appeal that annoys me the most. What truly annoys me is that, here is this guy lying in the middle of the road, either dead or dying and she asks God to help her – not the man she hit. That’s a mighty selfish appeal.
