Maybe She Will Get My Vote
jewel October 5th, 2007
I’ve often had conflicting opinions of Hillary Clinton. On one hand, she’s very ambitious – some would say opportunistic. On the other hand, she’s highly intelligent and she sees the big picture and understands the details. Of all of the Democratic candidates that have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the nomination, she might just be the one I would prefer. She’s not as liberal as I would like – neither was Bill, but I think she has the most potential to bring this country out of the hole of shame that Bush has dragged us into.
The thing that really made me think that she could really be the one was her speech at Carnegie Institution of Washington yesterday. She has promised to end the war on science. She said she would lift the federal limits on stem cell research and she also had something sensible to say about evolution (gasp!):
“I believe in evolution, and I am shocked at some of the things that people in public life have been saying,†Mrs. Clinton said in the interview.
Hillary didn’t have very nice things to say about the current administration’s science policy, accusing Bush of
waging what she called a “war on science†that has allowed political appointees to shape and in some cases distort science-based federal reports.
The NY Times goes on to say:
The Clinton attack on White House science policy is not especially new; Mrs. Clinton has used the phrase “war on science†frequently on the campaign trail, and it has reliably drawn applause from Democratic audiences. She has also indicated before that she would reverse the financing restriction on stem cell research and, more broadly, would stand against politicizing science.
I’ve got to say, it is refreshing to hear a candidate speak so strongly for science. I’m sick to death of superstition ruling politics. It’s damaging our standing as a nation and our future.
Unfortunately, Hillary also just had to get a word in about religion, but you can hardly blame her. That’s the political climate of today, unfortunately. Whatever her actual religious beliefs, I think she’ll keep them out of her decisions as president and that’s all that’s really important to me.
