To not vote sends the wrong message
jewel February 24th, 2008
I’m not sure how I managed to miss this, but apparently during the primaries, Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheists urged atheists to not vote in the general election this November! I find that absolutely astounding!
We must vote – I can’t say it loud enough or often enough. If we do not vote, then the message we are sending is not that of conscientious objection, but rather one of surrender.
The last 8 years with Bush have been a nightmare for civil rights, science and the separation of religion and government. This cannot continue if we are to keep our republic strong. I know it is frustrating to be effectively ignored by the electorate, but we’re just beginning our fight. To not vote is to give up on that fight.
Adam Lee over at Daylight Atheism has written an open letter to Ellen Johnson expressing – much better than I ever could – just how wrong she is.
