I’m Batman

jewel July 25th, 2008

Well, ok, I’m clearly not Batman. The suit would never fit. But still, it’s kinda fun to say. And who wouldn’t want all those toys!

We saw The Dark Knight a few nights ago and it’s really an excellent movie — I did not at all notice the time pass. It’s been quite a while since I’ve gone to see a movie that actually lived up to its hype and The Dark Knight delivers in spades. We saw it at our local IMAX, which was pretty cool, I must say, even though we couldn’t have food or beverages in the theater. There were also several special effects shots that took advantage of the IMAX screen and they were fantastic. The city shots from high above actually gave me just a touch of vertigo, too.

The Joker was, indeed, a very scary villain. Chilling, even. I think one of the things that made him so scary is the fact that he wasn’t really over the top. We have sociopaths in reality. They may not all dress like the Joker or wear clown makeup, but they are out there. We don’t often have to think about them, and thankfully their percentages are pretty low, but they are there. One thing I loved about Heath Ledger’s Joker is the fact that he really unnerved Batman. He made Batman make mistakes. He pushed Batman to almost break his one rule. And he taunted Batman to do it. The Joker didn’t even care about his own life and that made him dangerous.

I enjoyed Tim Burton’s Batman movies, they were comic booky and kinda fun. That said, Chris Nolan’s Batman is far better. Grittier. Darker. Plus — Christian Bale. Yeah.

Seeing The Dark Knight made me even more sad that Heath Ledger won’t be able to play that role again. I just can’t see anyone else playing the Joker anywhere near as well as Heath Ledger did. And I don’t wish to see anyone try. I’m glad that his last role was so good.

A completely agree with you on Heath Ledger’s performance. I think you will agree that a post-humanous Oscar would be more than just requisite sympathy.

    @ IMAX: *Envy*

@Title: Hey, at least you didn’t go for, “Dananananananana, Batmaaaan!”

I definitely agree that should he get an Oscar it will be because he earned it. And I’d like to see that happen.

Regarding IMAX - Yeah, it rocked, I won’t lie. I don’t think the seats at the IMAX were well designed for 2 1/2 hour movies, but I didn’t notice they were uncomfortable until I stood up after the movie, so I guess I was pretty engrossed. :-)

Heh. Yeah, I would never have gone for “Dananananananana, Batmaaaan!”, although that is funny. Batman has come a long way since my childhood. Yep, Batman grew up (I wish I could say the same thing about Star Wars). Of course the line was actually “I’m the Batman”, but I like it better without the article.

I saw Dark Knight on the 19th… at the drive-in. How’s that for oddly apropos for Batman :)

There’s actually still a drive-in operating in Ontario, about 15 minutes from my cottage.

At a drive in?! I can’t remember the last time I saw a drive in. lol. That is too cool.

Heath Ledger was almost too good for the movie: there were times he was so disturbing that I was thinking “This isn’t fun any more”…

I can see that. He was definitely a genuinely scary character.
