We’ve got our hour back!
jewel November 1st, 2009
W00t! Our weekend is 1 hour longer this weekend! I’m so happy that Daylight Saving Time is over. Not a fan. Now if only they would do away with it altogether.
Anyway, my clocks are all reset (most do so automagicly, thank goodness) and I am contemplating what to do for my extra hour of awakeness today. Hmmm….
Maybe I’ll continue reading Why Does E=mc2? (And Why Should We Care?). I started reading it recently, but haven’t had much time to dedicate to it. I love it so far, though, and look forward to reading more of it.
Maybe I’ll take an extra Spanish lesson — we’re going on vacation to Cancun in a few weeks and I’ve been brushing up on my tourist Spanish.
I could learn a new tune on my shiny new penny whistle.
Or, perhaps, I could take a walk and enjoy some of the last non-cold weather we’re likely to see here for awhile.
So many options. So, what do you plan to do with your extra hour today?

I am up early and catching up on my blog reading (especially Science blogs!)
There was a nice article by William F. Shughart II (McClatchy-Tribune News Service) in my paper today: “Killing Time – Daylight-saving saves no energy and may have fatal consequences.” A search will turn it up in several places.
They should just abolish it. The arguments used in its favor were specious.
Clear skies, Alan
As it turned out, I spent that extra hour (plus some) troubleshooting an issue on my PC. There is some program or driver that has been making me most frustrated, causing random lockups and whatnot. Reinstalled Windows 7 last night (yeah, I know…Windows…) as a last ditch effort and am going to stagger the reinstalling of things I use to try and pin it down because it’s a problem that has been plaguing me for about 6 weeks now, through reinstalling and upgrading, though I previously just reinstalled all my programs at once so was unable to pin it down.
The only thing I am pretty certain of is that it isn’t a hardware issue.
So, I’ve been offline for a couple days, which drives me a little nuts. lol.
Been pretty stable since the last reinstall, though, so if that holds true for another day, I’ll reinstall one of the other programs I use and then wait a day or two… computers can be such a pain in the ass.
Oh, and I’ve often wondered about the supposed energy savings of DST. Indiana, IIRC, just started observing DST a couple years ago. According to footnote #49 on the DST wiki page, DST has caused an increase in energy costs overall by 1% – 4%. If that is correct, it should prompt a reexamining of the absurd practice.
