It’s bigger on the inside!
jewel April 1st, 2012
Ok, so maybe not, but it is big enough for my Galaxy Tab 10.1, my Kindle, wallet, a water bottle, sunglasses, cell phone…in other words, plenty big enough
It’s been ages since I’ve felt, even a little, like blogging. As I believe I mentioned a few months ago, I’d been wanting to learn how to sew, so, that is exactly what I have been doing. I haven’t sewn much in the way of clothing, just yet (working on a couple things there), but I have managed to complete a couple fairly complicated messenger bags, along with a few very uninteresting things to learn on. Of the bags I have made, this one is my favorite. The Whovian fabric, I got at Spoonflower. It looked so much fun, I could not resist. There are a lot of amazing geeky fabric designs at Spoonflower. Too fun.
Anyhow, I am exceedingly proud of my efforts with this bag. I’ve already been commissioned to make a few more; though I doubt I’ll make a habit of that, since there are other things I want to make and these bags are a bit time consuming. But, I am having a blast.

Hey Jewel! Neat bag!
Did you make it to the Reason Rally last weekend? Sadly I did not.
Well, we were in DC, but no, we did not go. We did, however, go to see The Mythbusters at Warner Theater (which is why we were in DC). We just didn’t make it in early enough to check out the festivities, unfortunately. From the YouTube video’s I’ve watched, it looks like it was a blast!
Yeah, sad I missed it! I pre-ordered the DVD, can’t wait to see it
How was MythBusters?
Mythbusters was amazing. There was a lot of audience participation and lots of kids there. It was good to see.
I should definitely preorder the Reason Rally DVD, too. Excellent idea!
Are you willing to make another? My 9-year old is crazy about Dr. Who, but I am not a very good seamstress. Please let me know – she needs a backpack this year for school, but she prefers a messenger bag.
Thanks for your time,
Christina Hindley
Hi Christina,
Thank you for the compliment of wanting me to make one for your daughter! While I can possibly be talked into making another, I warn you, the fabric is expensive and the process itself a bit time consuming, for a bag (about 15 hours total). The materials alone for that bag ran me between $80 – $90 (the Whovian fabric being $60 of that…I used the linen canvas). So while I might be willing, I wouldn’t do it for under $200, and though that would be a low price for my time, I think that’s a rather steep price for a 9 year old’s school bag. I’m also not certain I could complete it before school starts, as I’ve got a couple other projects in the works at the moment.
With a bit of practice, determination and some basic sewing skills, you could make something similar, I’m sure. The bag pictured on this post was the 3rd messenger bag I’ve made (the other 2 were practice for this one…and made with much less expensive fabric) and in the first 8 items of anything I’ve made. The skill level was higher than my skill level at the time, but I have a rather determined nature and really wanted this bag. I decided to take up sewing, as a hobby, at the end of last year and finally started actually learning and sewing at the beginning of this year.
Thank you – wow!! That fabric is very expensive..bummer. Thanks for letting me know and congrats on you new hobby
Christina
You’re most welcome. It’s a worthwhile hobby, though occasionally expensive. I’ve never been particularly creative before so it gives me an outlet for that.
