At least I hope not. Actually, I hope nothing important happens in the next few weeks because it will be completely overshadowed by the death of Michael Jackson. Maybe this sounds callus, but I’m not really sad that he died. I’m not dancing with joy or anything, but I’m not sad. I have no desire to listen to his music non-stop or watch the – no doubt – endless tributes on the television or even read very much on the internet. Except the autopsy report when that’s complete. That I’ll read. It’ll at least be new. Continue Reading »

I find things like this quite interesting. Not as much because of the virus itself (although there are aspects there that intrigue me), but in watching other people’s reaction to it. With this strain of flu, I’m seeing people react far more strongly to it than I ever do with the regular, run of the mill, flu strains. At work and on the internet people are talking about it. That’s unusual all by itself. Over an over again I hear people say this scares them. I’ve even heard a couple people comment on how they are glad they don’t eat pork! I was floored to see that some people really do think you can get the flu from food. Continue Reading »

Yesterday (you may have heard) the United States of America swore in a new president. We took the day off work – not to fight the crowds and the cold to be there in person, as close as we live to DC, but so that we could watch everything from the comfort of our climate controlled livingroom. We invited a friend over, made some light snacks, had champaign at the ready and we celebrated. It was an amazing day. I did not write about the inauguration yesterday because I wanted to just enjoy the moment and let everything sink in a bit. Continue Reading »

In spite of the fact that I live so close to DC, I will not be making the short journey into the city this weekend to take part in any of the festivities. Not that I wouldn’t like to, mind you, but it will be way too crowded for my tastes, so I’m ok with watching from afar (well, not that far!).
On Tuesday, my husband and I will enjoy the inauguration from the comfort of our climate controlled living room. I’m really quite excited. This will be the third inauguration that I can recall watching. Continue Reading »

I just read that Majel Barrett Roddenberry has died of lukemia. I’ve been rewatching Star Trek: The Next Generation and have particularly enjoyed her her Lwaxana Troi character. Sure, she could be annoying, but she was interesting and entertaining and uninhibited. And, hey, she wasn’t my mom.
Also, which I think is particulary cool, her family has requested that in leiu of flowers, that donations be made to Precious Paws or CARE.
Rest in peace, Majel.

Work was all abuzz today about McCain’s pick for VP. She’s young, a woman and has a story. McCain is no doubt banking on her to bring in the women voters, particularly the bitter Hillary supporters. Personally, I’m hoping that Hillary’s supporters are smarter than that. While there are quite a few things I don’t like about Hillary Clinton, she is a strong woman and a force to be reckoned with. She has spoken out in regards to women’s rights and issues and has long been an advocate for affordable health care. And she was able to win over quite a lot of folks. Also, she has spoken out in favor of evidence based science standards and a woman’s right to choose. Sarah Palin is about as opposite as you can get from Clinton. Of course maybe McCain is just trying to appear like the maverick he no longer is (if he ever really was) by choosing her. Continue Reading »

This alleged Bigfoot discovery was all the talk around the water cooler at work today. Yeah, color me skeptical. I could barely contain my laughter when I heard about it. Seriously? Are the news outlets bored? Continue Reading »

A Russian court just convicted Grigory Grabovoy of fraud for bilking people out of money by claiming he could raise the dead. Like our own Silvia Browne and John Edward, this creep made a living preying on the desperate and the grieving. People who are very vulnerable to snake oil salesmen. Well, now he’s doing hard labor in prison. When can we start convicting fraudsters like this in this country? Continue Reading »

Good on them, I say! The California Supreme Court has declared gay marriage bans to be unconstitutional. Now if only the other states that do not allow same-sex marriages/unions would come to their senses and realize that the world isn’t going to end if we allow homosexual adults the same rights and privileges that their heterosexual counterparts get. Also on my wish list is to get rid of the incredibly unnecessary and discriminatory federal Defense of Marriage Act of 1996.

I miss my TV shows…Heroes, Bones, Numb3rs…and I want them back.
Rumor has it there has been progress made in the talks, which is fantastic news, and the strike could end sometime this coming week. Of course, even if it does end it will be weeks before we get new stuff. *sigh*
