Never Gets Old
jewel April 12th, 2009
Today on Bad Astronomy, Phil Plait linked to a BBC Radio 4 program where Brian Cox speaks about Carl Sagan. Listening to it made me nostalgic to watch the Cosmos TV series. So, I just fetched my DVD set and have begun watching.
Even 30 years after it was made, Cosmos is relevant and brilliant and inspiring. Carl Sagan takes us all on journey to know ourselves, where we came from and, hopefully, where we’re going.
Carl Sagan introduced me to skepticism and critical thinking and I am ever thankful for that. He inspired me to learn. Far from taking the beauty out of the universe, science teaches us just how magnificent it really is. And that we can even comprehend any of it is truly awesome.
If you haven’t seen Cosmos it’s available on Hulu. Check it out!
Ok, I’m ready for the writers strike to end now…
jewel February 3rd, 2008
I miss my TV shows…Heroes, Bones, Numb3rs…and I want them back.
Rumor has it there has been progress made in the talks, which is fantastic news, and the strike could end sometime this coming week. Of course, even if it does end it will be weeks before we get new stuff. *sigh*
Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial
jewel November 10th, 2007
Some very cool news – on Tuesday, November 13th, at 8pm PBS will be airing a new NOVA program about the Kitzmiller vs. Dover trial on teaching ID in public schools. Check your local listings.
For more information, see the press release or click on the graphic to be taken to the NOVA site on the program.
edited to add: The NY Times also has a pretty good write up on Judgment Day.
I have a confession…
jewel August 24th, 2007
I seem to have gained quite the addiction to cop shows. It all started with Law & Order. It runs on TNT most nights and I look forward to watching it. And then there’s The Closer. I just love Kyra Sedgwick’s character. And I’ve taken to watching Numb3rs when I work out. Not exactly a cop show, as it centers more on the FBI and a math genius.
It’s weird, though. I never thought I would like these shows, but I do. Who knew?!
Saving Grace
jewel July 23rd, 2007
I watch a fair amount of TNT TV. I enjoy Law & Order and The Closer. The past couple of months we have been bombarded with adverts for a new show (that starts tonight) called Saving Grace. I won’t be watching it. I can barely stand the trailers.
My least favorite of the trailers shows the main character, inebriated way beyond driving capability, right after she has an accident, bending over a man in the road (that she presumably hit), and she says “God help me.” And he appears.
Those that know me probably assume that it is her appeal to God that annoys me the most. Although I do, indeed, find an appeal to an invisible sky daddy to be unnecessary and insulting to human dignity, they would be wrong that it is that appeal that annoys me the most. What truly annoys me is that, here is this guy lying in the middle of the road, either dead or dying and she asks God to help her – not the man she hit. That’s a mighty selfish appeal.
